How To Reheat Crepes – I Test 4 Methods [Pics]

I love a big stack of crepes on the weekend, with plenty of delicious fillings to accompany them.

But if like me, you always end up making too many, you’ve probably asked yourself if it’s worth keeping them for reheating later.

Good news.

After trying out four different reheating methods, I’m happy to report that you should absolutely save your leftovers.

In this post, I’ll take you through how to keep your crepes soft, warm, and crisp without sacrificing any of their taste or texture.

Note: The methods I detail below work for both filled and unfilled crepes.

A note on my experiment

I made an enormous batch of crepes on Sunday, ate a load, and left the rest in the fridge.

The next day I tried out four different reheating methods.

These included:

  • In a skillet (best method overall)
  • In the microwave (quick but not my favorite)
  • In the oven (good for large quantities)
  • In the air fryer (similar to the oven, but faster)

The skillet produced the most fresh-tasting results.

I could hardly tell I was eating leftovers at all.

The microwave was fast, but the crepes were a bit soggy.

The oven is perfect for reheating lots of crepes at once, but it’s a little slow (an air fryer is faster).

Reheating crepes in a skillet

Set a non-stick skillet over medium heat on your stove. Coat it lightly with butter or cooking spray. Heat your crepe on one side for 30-60 seconds. Once warm, gently flip it over and warm the other side for a further 30 seconds. Serve immediately.

If you are reheating crepes from frozen, warm up each side for a bit longer until the crepe is soft.

How to reheat crepes in a skillet:

  1. Lightly coat a non-stick frying pan with cooking spray or butter.
  2. Set the pan over medium heat on your stove and allow it to warm up.
  3. Place your crepe (filled or plain) in the pan and heat it for 30-60 seconds.
  4. Gently flip the crepe over and heat it for a further 30-60 seconds.
  5. Remove from the pan and serve immediately.

Work sparingly with your butter, oil, or cooking spray so that you don’t turn your crepes greasy.

Temperature-wise, keeping the stove to medium heat is a must to avoid burning your crepes.

If you want your crepes extra crispy, leave them in the pan for a little longer.

My verdict

This was my favorite method.

It kept my crepes soft in the middle but made them nice and crispy around the edges (yum!).

The only potential downside is that you have to reheat your crepes one by one, but it’s worth it for that good-as-new taste and texture.

Reheating crepes in the microwave

Stack a few crepes on a microwave-safe plate. Separate each crepe with parchment paper or a slightly damp paper towel. Ensure there is an additional piece of damp paper towel over the top of the stack. Microwave them in 10-20 second intervals until soft and warm. Serve immediately.

If you’re reheating filled crepes, stick to 1-2 at a time.

How to reheat crepes in the microwave:

  1. Place a few crepes in a stack on a microwave-safe plate.
  2. Separate the layers with parchment paper or pieces of lightly dampened paper towel to prevent sticking.
  3. Cover the top layer with a piece of damp paper towel.
  4. Heat in 10-20 second intervals until warm and steamy.

The damp paper towel helps re-introduce moisture to the crepes. Without it, your crepes will turn out dry and tough.

You can heat between 3-4 crepes at a time, but I don’t recommend more than that.

Also, make sure you’re going to eat the crepes straight away. Leaving microwaved crepes standing around for more than 5 minutes is a bad idea.

They’ll turn into cardboard.

If you’re reheating filled crepes, be careful biting into them because the fillings can get very hot.

My verdict

This method is low-effort and requires minimal fuss, making it a good option if you’re in a hurry and want a quick snack.

However, the microwave does little for restoring crispiness, and my crepes were a little limp and soggy.

Reheating crepes in the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Optionally brush your crepes lightly with butter for extra flavor. Place a stack of crepes on a sheet of foil and separate them with parchment paper. Enclose the whole stack in the foil and heat for 5-10 minutes. Once hot, serve immediately.

If you like, you can also sprinkle the crepes lightly with lemon juice before wrapping them up and popping them in the oven.

How to reheat crepes in the oven:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Optional: Brush each crepe lightly with butter for additional flavor and moisture.
  3. Stack 4-5 crepes, separated by parchment paper, on a sheet of foil.
  4. Optional: Lightly sprinkle lemon juice over your crepes.
  5. Enclose the whole stack in the foil, and pop in the oven for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Once hot, serve immediately.

Don’t try to heat too many crepes in one stack (4-5 max), as the ones in the center may end up cold.

If need be, heat two separate crepe stacks simultaneously.

Enclosing your crepes in foil locks in moisture and prevents them from drying out.

This method works well for frozen crepes too. They will just take a little longer.

My verdict

This is my go-to method for reheating lots of crepes at once. It makes them lovely and warm without turning them dry.

You can also add loads of extra flavor with butter and lemon juice.

That being said, if you’re only reheating 2 or 3 crepes, this isn’t a good option. It takes quite a while, especially preheating the oven.

Reheating crepes in the air fryer

Set your air fryer to 350°F (180°C). Wrap a few crepes, separated by parchment paper, in foil. Place your crepe parcel in the fryer basket and heat it for 2-3 minutes. Once hot, remove from the air fryer and serve immediately.  For crispy crepes, remove the foil.

As with the oven method, you can sprinkle your crepes lightly with lemon juice for a bit of extra flavor and moisture.

How to reheat crepes in the air fryer:

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Optional: Lightly sprinkle your crepes with lemon juice.
  3. Separate a stack of crepes with parchment paper and wrap them in foil (or skip the foil if you want crispy crepes). You may need to fold the crepes to get then to fit.
  4. Place your crepes in the fryer basket.
  5. Heat for 2-3 minutes or until hot.
  6. Serve immediately.

Air fryers give off a very strong direct heat, so be careful not to burn your crepes.

Furthermore, don’t stack too many, as you may find the ones in the center stay cool.

My verdict

This method yields results similar to the oven but is much faster.

You can’t heat as many at a time, but you won’t need to wait for the oven to warm up.

How to store crepes

You can store crepes for up to 3 days in the fridge before they start drying out. First, cool your crepes to room temperature and remove any fruit/liquid fillings that may turn them soggy. Then, stack your crepes, separate them with paper towels, and wrap them in plastic wrap or foil.

You can store any fillings you like separately.

After the second day, the crepes will be showing their age. If you want to keep them as fresh as possible, freeze them instead of putting them in the fridge.

Note: you can also store crepe batter in the fridge for up to 4 days. Just make sure to cover the bowl with plastic wrap.

You might have to give the batter a quick stir to bring it back together before using it.

Can you freeze crepes?

You can freeze both unfilled and filled crepes, providing the fillings are freezer safe (no fruit or watery fillings that turn crepes soggy). Freezing is a good way to preserve crepes freshness and only adds a few minutes to the cooking time. They’ll last up to 3 months in the freezer.

How to freeze crepes:

  1. Allow your crepes to cool to room temperature.
  2. Remove any fillings that could turn your crepes soggy e.g fruit, cream, or watery fillings.
  3. Separate your crepes with parchment paper and stack them. Don’t use paper towel in the freezer because it may stick to the crepes.
  4. Wrap the stack in foil or slip it into a freezer bag (removing excess air).
  5. Label and use within 3 months.

Crepes hold up well in the freezer, but you need to work gently with them as they tend to tear easily.

You can also freeze crepe batter. Simply pour it into a freezer bag or airtight container and use it within 4 months.

How to reheat frozen crepes

To reheat frozen crepes, thaw them on the counter or overnight in the fridge and reheat them in a skillet. You can also use the microwave, the oven, or an air fryer. If you’re in a hurry, you can reheat your crepes straight from frozen – simply increase the heating time.
