What’s your favorite tipple?
In honor of National Rum Day, we’ve created this interactive map so you can see how your state compares to the rest of the U.S. when it comes to its love for rum.
Shots of rum consumed per person per year

The graph shows shots of rum consumed per person per year.
- America drinks 293 million bottles of rum per year – that’s enough rum to fill 88 olympic sized swimming pools. Rum-believable!
- The classic mojito is the most searched for rum cocktail in the USA, followed by a pina colada, a daiquiri, and finally a mai tai. Which one would you order?
- We drink the most rum during the holiday season in December and then in the summer months of July and August. Straight rum in December and cocktails in the summer.
- There are currently 252 distilleries producing rum in the USA across 46 different states, and this number is rising rapidly!
How many shots of rum do you drink a year (no judgment!)?
Psst… we have a guide on all the best substitutes for rum extract if you ever need one! Or if rum isn’t your thing, we also have guides on the best substitutes for vodka, what to use instead of sake, and how to replace sherry in recipes.

Methodology & Sources
We obtained state-level rum consumption data from The Beverage Information Group’s Distilled Spirits Survey [Liquor Handbook, P140] [1].
We determined the most popular rum-based cocktail in each state using Google Trends data for the period 15th August 2021 to 15th August 2022 [2].
